Apologies for my diminished correspondence. This past week has been really busy academically. Nevertheless I managed to squeeze in a trip this weekend and last.
Last week Sunday, Zhao Xing (Bob - right) treated myself and 2 other Geomatics students to a delicious chinese lunch before we headed off to Fort Calgary with the Centre for International Students.
The trip to Fort Calgary involved a fairly long train ride and an even longer walk/wait for the train. Considering that the temperature was around -13C I quickly found it rather unpleasant. The fort on the left is the birth point of Calgary in the 1870's. It hosted the North West Mounted Police who were meant to curb the illegal whiskey trade. Calgary, rapidly grew from a tiny little barn (picture, bottom left) into a thriving metropolis from a booming oil and cattle industry (picture, bottom right, 1965). This was also encompanied by the incredibly rapid dessimation of the 
plains bison found in the area and the disappearance of the original plains people who lived there for 11 000 years. The situation of these First Nations is a real tragedy, most of whom live on reserves outside of Calgary and seem to be the unseen and unremembered people.
